Privacy Beyond Telemetry: The 15-Minute Network Audit

Back to Insights

You lock your front door before you go to sleep, but you leave your digital windows wide open. Most people assume that privacy issues are limited to social media companies tracking your likes, but the reality is much more invasive.

At 3:00 AM, your house is noisy. Your Smart TV is reporting your viewing habits. Your Windows PC is uploading telemetry about what applications you opened. Your smart thermostat is sending usage data back to the manufacturer. We aren't trying to become invisible ghosts, but we should at least close the blinds.

Level 1: The Quick Fix (Device DNS)

EFFORT: LOW

Every time you visit a website, your device asks a server where it is. This is known as the Domain Name System, or DNS. By default, your Internet Service Provider answers that request. This means AT&T or Comcast knows every site you visit, and they legally sell that log to advertisers.

You can change this "phonebook" on your laptop or phone in 30 seconds. By switching to an encrypted, privacy-focused DNS provider, you blind your ISP and block malicious domains automatically.

Quad9

Security

A non-profit service that blocks known malware domains. It does not log your IP address. It is free and requires no account.

NextDNS

Custom

Allows you to create custom blocklists. You can block TikTok, gambling sites, or specific trackers across all your devices.

Level 2: The Blanket Solution (The Router)

EFFORT: MEDIUM

Configuring every single iPad, Xbox, and smart toaster in your house is tedious. Some devices, like smart fridges, do not even have a setting to change their DNS.

The solution is to fix the front door. You can log into your home router and change the DNS settings there. Once you point your router to Quad9 or NextDNS, every device connected to your Wi-Fi is automatically forced to use the private phonebook.

This is the most efficient way to stop "chatty" smart home devices from phoning home. If your Samsung TV tries to contact the ad server, the request hits your privacy filter and simply vanishes.

Level 3: The OS Switch (Linux)

EFFORT: HIGH

You can block ads, but you cannot block the Operating System itself. Windows is telemetry. Sending data to Microsoft is not a bug; it is their business model. No amount of registry tweaking or "de-bloating" scripts can truly silence an OS designed to report on you.

The only true solution is to switch to Linux. When you use an operating system like Linux Mint or Fedora, the code is open source. There is no hidden upload of your activity.

⚠️ The "Anti-Cheat" Trade-off

Switching to Linux means losing access to kernel-level anti-cheat games (like Valorant or Call of Duty). Understand that kernel-level anti-cheat is essentially a rootkit that watches every file on your system. Losing access to it is a privacy feature, not a bug.

Level 4: The Phone Dilemma

EFFORT: EXTREME

Smartphones are the ultimate tracking device. Fixing them is a spectrum, ranging from basic hygiene to completely replacing the operating system.

Option A: The Settings Audit

If you have a standard Android phone, you can still improve your privacy significantly. Turn off "Location History" in your Google Account. Reset your Advertising ID regularly. Most importantly, use the "Private DNS" feature in your Android connection settings to force the phone to use Quad9, even when you are on 5G.

Option B: The Custom ROM

For those who want to truly own their hardware, you can replace the Android OS entirely with a custom ROM. However, the landscape is shifting.

GrapheneOS

Gold Standard

The standard for mobile security. It removes Google entirely and hardens the code against exploits. Requires a Google Pixel.

LineageOS

Legacy

Extends the life of older phones. It offers more privacy than stock Android but lacks the hardened security features of Graphene.

⚠️ Warning: CalyxOS Status

CalyxOS was once a top recommendation, but development is currently paused. On August 1, 2025, the Calyx Institute announced a pause following the departure of its founder and tech lead. As of now, no new security updates are being provided. We currently recommend GrapheneOS instead.

Summary

Privacy is not a switch you flip once. It is a hygiene habit. You do not need to do everything on this list today. Start with Level 1. Change your DNS to a provider that respects you. Once you realize how easy it is to close the digital blinds, the rest of the steps will follow naturally.
